Current situation

As of today, May 7, nine new cases of COVID-19 were identified, bringing Nova Scotia’s total to 1,007 confirmed cases. These cases range in age from under 10 to over 90. Five individuals are currently in hospital, two of those in ICU, and 708 individuals have recovered. There have been 32,289 negative test results. Testing numbers are updated daily at https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus.

Current situation

As of today, May 6, Nova Scotia has 998 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in people ranging in age from under 10 to over 90. Five individuals are currently in hospital, two of those in ICU, and 661 individuals have recovered. There have been 31,541 negative test results. Current situation

As of today, May 4, Nova Scotia has 985 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in people ranging in age from under 10 to over 90. Six individuals are currently in hospital, two of those in ICU, and 638 individuals have recovered. There have been 30,441 negative test results. Testing numbers are updated daily at https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus.

The province is also reporting one additional death related to COVID-19 at Northwood long-term care home in Halifax Regional Municipality, bringing the total to 38.

Mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Mental Health Commission of Canada has developed three crisis response training programs for essential workers:Caring for Yourself, Caring for your Team, and Caring for Others. Registration for these courses will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be available at no-cost for essential workers as defined by the Government of Canada here.

Current situation

Today, April 28, Nova Scotia is reporting three additional deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the total to 27. The deaths occurred at the Northwood long-term care home in Halifax Regional Municipality. Fifteen new cases were identified Monday, April 27. Read the full release here. The QEII Health Sciences Centre’s microbiology lab completed 483 Nova Scotia tests on April 27 and is operating 24 hours a day.

Northwood Needs our Help

Dear members,

Nova Scotia is entering a challenging time in our collective fight against COVID-19 and there is urgent need for trained volunteers to work at the region’s largest long-term care facility, Halifax’s Northwood Manor.

The government has asked Unifor, CUPE, NSNU and NSGEU to recruit volunteers who are willing to work at Northwood Manor in the following positions and shifts for the next few weeks:

Days

  • 10 Continuing Care Assistants
  • 4 Registered Nurses/Licensed Practical Nurses

Current situation

As of today, April 20, Nova Scotia has 721 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in people ranging in age from under 10 to over 90.Twelve individuals are currently in hospital, four of those in ICU, and 284 individuals have recovered.

As of April 19, there were nine licensed long-term care homes and unlicensed seniors facilities in Nova Scotia with cases of COVID-19, involving 127 residents and 61 staff.

Here at Unifor, we have been hard at work to assist our members as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds here in Nova Scotia. The biggest priority for us has been to address the serious safety concerns being brought to us by all frontline workers - particularly health care workers.

Current situation

As of today, April 13, Nova Scotia has 15,580 negative test results, 474 positive COVID-19 test results and three deaths. Nine individuals are currently in hospital, four of those in ICU. Five unions representing health care workers providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic are calling on government and employers to sign onto a safety protocol that would ensure these frontline workers feel protected and supported during this unprecedented time.
