December 6, 2022, marks 33 years since 14 women were murdered at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. Every year since then, Every Woman’s Centre has Hosted a vigil to remember those victims. Along with all victims of domestic abuse here in Cape Breton.

The incredible tough year continues for our members with restrictions in place curtailing many programs of our union, especially the in-person activities of the Recreation Department.
The virtual ‘Fantasy Hockey Pool’ held during last year’s hockey season was a tremendous success with close to 1,700 of our Unifor members participating, from coast to coast to coast.
Today marked the first set of bargaining dates between the Council of Health Care Unions and the Employer (NSHA). This process began today with the exchange of Bargaining Proposals.
This is the first of eight (8) bargaining dates between the parties scheduled between now and May 13, 2021.
Bargaining Update: Healthcare Bargaining Commences as Council Files Compliant with Labour Board
Health care bargaining will begin with the exchange of proposals with NSHA and IWK on Thursday, April 15th, 2021. Following the exchange, the Employers - NSHA / IWK, and the Health Care Council of Unions have eight bargaining dates scheduled up to May 13, 2021. This marks the first step in securing a new collective agreement for the Healthcare Bargaining Unit. Your previous agreement expired October 31, 2020.
Bargaining new contracts are about to begin for NSHA.
Information updates and voting will be done on line. We are attempting to get email addresses from our NSHA members. We have started a post card campaign.. which will be mailed out to the members on Friday of this week . This postcard explains what the local is attempting to do and instructions on how to enter their email address. With that said we will still need our NSHA unit chairs to be in the loop for the following :
Bargaining Update for Unifor Local 4600 members in the Healthcare Bargaining Unit
As you are likely aware, your collective agreement expired on October 31st, 2020. Unifor started preparations for bargaining shortly after, sending out our membership surveys in January and reviewing the results early in February.
Just an update on Unifor 4600
Masks for members. Masks will be distributed at your worksite by Unit Chairs. As you can imagine it may take longer to reach everyone at our larger sites. We are using the most recent member list, but if masks have been given out at your site and you or someone you know may have been missed, please contact our Local office 902 539 9024.
This pandemic has tested the limits of our already underfunded social services, and revealed cruel realities about government priorities.
Across the country and around the world, workers are questioning the current economic order that benefits corporations and the rich at the expense of working people’s well-being and even health.
As of today, May 27, one new cases of COVID-19 was identified, bringing Nova Scotia’s total to 1,053 confirmed cases. These cases range in age from under 10 to over 90. Seven individuals are currently in hospital, three of those in ICU, and 975 individuals have recovered. There have been 38,441 negative test results. Testing numbers are updated daily at https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus.
Visitor restrictions are in place at all Nova Scotia Health Authority hospitals to limit the spread of respiratory illness, including COVID-19, and to protect our vulnerable patients and staff. We understand visitor restrictions have been difficult for patients, families and staff. The needs of patients and families are always at the heart of our decision making. With that in mind, and with cases of COVID-19 decreasing, we will allow additional support people in some circumstances, where it is feasible and safe to do so within public health guidelines.
